My story

I'm sorry if this is not the right subreddit for this type of post but I don't know where to write and what to do.

Story

I've been dreaming of going to India since I was a kid, I'm from a rather poor family and I knew I might never be able to afford a trip to Asia (note I live in Eastern Europe and make around 400 EUR / $500 a month). I've never been abroad nor flown an airplane before.

About two months ago I've found a really cheap flight to Goa, India from my country, normally you have to pay for flight like this at least 400 EUR / $500 but ebookers.ie/ebookers.com were selling them for about 40% less (250 EUR / $310).

It was so cheap I've decided to spend most of my savings on it. I've booked the flights for April.

I've booked a hotel in India, Goa too (rest of my savings, non-refundable), and about 2 months after booking the tickets I've got an e-mail saying I have to pay 470 EUR / $600 fine ebookers were charged with by airlines or they will cancel my reservation... I found it crazy, like, I got the tickets, they were confirmed by both Lufthansa an Jet Airways yet I have to pay some kind of a fine? It will make the flight more expensive than the regular one actually!

I don't need any help here, but would really appreciate any information what can I do. Keep in mind even if I got the full refund I will lose a lot of money due to currency conversions fees (there are more people like me and guys who got 4 tickets lost over 100 EUR because of this).

I can't afford losing any money especially if this wasn't my mistake. I wouldn't start this post but I've noticed scandalous practices of ebookers - they don't respond to emails, remove 99% Goa-related questions from their Facebook Profile and they do this:

Please, please if you know anyone who works for Ebookers just PM me. I would love this post to get some attention, because it looks like a huge company (ebookers is a brand of Orbitz Worldwide) is keeping clients money for up to 4 months, refund less than we paid and censor the internet. This is crazy.

NOTE: you're still able to buy these tickets using other booking companies such as Airtickets24, this was an 'error fare' but the tickets were sold in 4 or 5 batches during 2 or 3 months and they're still selling them. I don't understand that, as I'm not experienced with traveling. But how can they still sell these tickets?

Here at ebookers, we are always watching for events that may affect your travel.

We are writing to you with regards to your recent flight reservation (censored) on ebookers.ie. Unfortunately, due to a third party technical error affecting our ticketing process, your flight reservation was offered at a low price which was incorrect.

Following discussions with the airlines and technology provider, we regret to inform you that the tickets cannot be honoured at the price at which they were issued.

We understand that this will cause some frustration and our specialist service team will do all they can to help you find the most suitable solution for you.

There are now two options available to you:

OPTION 1 – We can cancel your reservation and provide you with a full refund. If we do not hear from you by the 12th November then we will automatically assume you have chosen this option and will proceed with the cancellation. Once cancellation is completed, you will receive a cancellation email from us and all refunds will be processed by the airline directly within 4 weeks.

OPTION 2 – You can pay an additional €467.62 per ticket, which is the amount required to retain your existing ticket reservation. If you choose this option, please call our specialist service team which is available 24 hours a day, on +44 (0)203 147 6950 and they will process this immediately.

At ebookers, we truly value our customers and would like to stress our sincere apologies for having to write to you about this very unexpected and rare matter. If you have already requested a refund or paid the additional cost, please disregard this email.

Note the €467.62 is exactly ~$600 = the fine ebookers got from Jet Airways.
