I used Lucas' The Art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Speech Communication class at Baruch College. While I wound up being very impressed with the textbook, I felt that it had a number of significant shortcomings and wound up preferring Engleberg and Daly's Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking course at Wagner College.

For a textbook this is pretty good
The title should really be 'The amateur book of high school classroom presentations'.. If you're an experienced businessperson, please don't waste your time!
The only reason why I'm criticizing the book is because the title is completely misleading.. In no way, shape or form is this remotely close to deserving its score when benchmarking to many other public speaking/ presentation books like:
- The art of public speaking (original Carnegie's version)
- Presentation zen

I recommend this book to whoever wants to learn public speaking. It talks about the most fundamental aspects of public speaking, including ethics, purpose, organization, vocal variety, body language, audience analysis, and etc.

This book presents public speaking in an interesting writing style. The discussions in the book are topical and the example speeches do a good job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of amateur public speakers in a class. I thought it did a great job of pointing out things to think about when making a speech that you may not automatically think about. I learned lessons that I will be able to use in argument and public speaking for a long time.

I think all people should read this book, it is very helpful in life because at some point, you will need to speak in front of a crowd. And the most important thing is not to be nervous. This book totally eliminates the scary factor of speaking in public in different occasions! My textbook for this semester! I'm excited to take this public speaking course.
--> Now at the halfway point of the semester, and I have finished the textbook. At this point, we have learned about how to be a successful public speaker. For the rest of the semester, we have to practice..by getting up in front of the class and..wait for it..speaking. Who would have thought?! Honestly, I learned quite a bit from this text, BUT practice makes perfect. :) Wish me luck!

Pretty basic stuff, but does include sections that focus on certain types of speeches, so it was helpful when I was constructing some of mine. Lots of information you may find in your composition textbook, as it focuses a lot on constructing arguments. The general advice on calming your nerves and getting over stage fright is great, but not exactly easy to take to heart.. it's public speaking, nothing can calm those nerves for the first few speeches, no matter how gently it's written.

This is an excellent book full of great suggestions for writing and giving presentations. I can imagine any other book about public speaking being insanely dry, but Lucas kept his chapters full of funny (if not completely believable) examples. He also includes great laundry lists of what to include in informative, persuasive, and group presentations. This book would definitely be helpful for students taking speech classes for the first time.

The Art of Public Speaking was a comprehensive textbook. Although less boring than other texts, the information contained was better suited to lectures than plain reading. It works as a good resource and reference, and the website was also helpful with the media it offered. As far as Public Speaking texts go, I would recommend this.

the audio cd's are better than the book, although, this program takes us thru the basics step by step in case you like repetition; it follows thru each step again and again for goog retention. This same course was taught to my sone when he was in the air force - if it's good enough for our airmen getting degrees, then it's good enough for me too!

Didn't read every chapter in this because they were given periodically to me in a class. Counting it though cause I read the majority of the lengthy chapters. It was an okay 'guide' to public speaking. Actually putting the text to use in a speech was better for learning.

Not giving five stars simply because the book isn't THAT impressive. Four stars because it's pretty solid. With this book and practice, I think pretty much anybody could learn to prepare and deliver quality speeches. Lots of examples are included as well, which is cool.

I am presently reading this book for Speech/Communication class and I think it is well written and extremely helpful in writing speeches and communicating in general. It goes into the audience, different types of speeches, outlining, presenting, use of voice, etc.
This is for my Com 113 class, and it is not on my read again list..
